A knock block in place of the bar
The IKAPE knock box V2 is an ABS box for spent espresso pucks. IKAPE removed the traditional knock bar and fitted a large knock block, 10 mm thick, in its place. IKAPE states the block's larger bearing area makes the coffee grounds easier to knock out of the basket.
IKAPE presents it as a way to keep the coffee bar tidy. By IKAPE's count the box takes 12 to 18 spent pucks before it needs emptying, so one box covers several days of shots at home.
The block and its service life
The knock block is 10 mm thick. IKAPE states that in actual knocking use it withstands 2,000 to 6,000 knocks, which IKAPE puts at a service life of three to five years. Both figures are IKAPE's own and are not a warranty term.
The anti-slip pad
A large anti-slip pad covers the underside of the box. IKAPE states the pad keeps the box solid on the counter under a strong knock. Set it on a flat, dry surface and the pad does the holding.
How to use it
- Set the box on a flat surface and check that the pad sits flush.
- Hold the portafilter by the handle and strike the block once, firmly.
- If the puck stays in the basket, knock once more.
- Empty the box before the grounds reach the top of the block.
- Rinse it under the tap and let it dry upside down.
Materials and care
The body is ABS, which IKAPE describes as non-polluting, sturdy and durable. IKAPE says cleaning is a matter of rinsing the box directly with water. Empty it every day: spent grounds left standing go sour, and the smell carries into the next puck you knock in.
