See what the puck is doing

This is a bottomless portafilter with a mahogany handle and a stainless steel filter basket, sold in ten versions for different group heads. Three of them make it a De'Longhi bottomless portafilter: 51 mm with 2 ears, 51 mm with 3 ears for the EC680 and EC685, and 51 mm for La Specialista.

With no spouts, the coffee leaves the basket in full view. IKAPE's point is that you can watch the extraction and adjust when the flow runs too fast, too slow or through a channel.

The basket comes with it

Each portafilter comes with a universal stainless steel filter basket. IKAPE states that its fine perforations filter the coffee more evenly and efficiently, and that it is cast in food-grade stainless steel, hand-polished and sized to nest properly in the handle.

Choose the right size

  • 51 mm, De'Longhi, 2 ears: ECP3420, EC155, BCO430, EC260 and EC310.51 mm
  • 51 mm, De'Longhi, 3 ears: EC680 and EC685, and also SMEG and EUPA machines.51 mm
  • 51 mm, De'Longhi La Specialista, 3 ears: the EC9XXX.M range, among them 9155, 9335, 9355, 9665 and 9865.51 mm
  • 51 mm, other brands, 3 ears: casebrew, Arielli km-501w, Silvercrest, Russell Hobbs Retro, MAXIM'S MKA71, Derlla, Gulisso, Agaro and Severin. Not for De'Longhi machines.51 mm
  • 54 mm, Sage / Breville, 3 ears: BES870, BES878 and BES880, Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Duo-Temp Pro. IKAPE states it does not fit the Bambino or the Bambino Plus.54 mm
  • 58 mm, E61 group, 2 ears: E61 machines, Flair 58, ECM, Rocket, Sanremo, Synesso, Slayer, VBM and Lelit.58 mm
  • 58 mm, WPM, 2 ears: WPM machines only; IKAPE states it fits no other brand.58 mm
  • 58 mm, Sage / Breville, 2 ears: the 58 mm machines, including Dual Boiler, Oracle and Oracle Touch. IKAPE states it fits no other brand.58 mm
  • 58 mm, Gaggia, 2 tilted ears: machines with angled 58 mm portafilter heads, such as Gaggia and some Bezzera models.58 mm
  • 58 mm, universal, 3 ears: the standard three-ear 58 mm head, for example Barsetto and Maxim three-ear machines.58 mm

Each version fits one kind of group head, so the machine matters more than the diameter.

How to use it

  1. Dose, distribute and tamp level; with no spouts, an uneven tamp shows at once.
  2. Lock it in, start the pump and watch the underside for the first few seconds.
  3. Put the cup close under the basket, because a bottomless portafilter sprays if the puck fails.
  4. Knock the puck out, rinse the basket and wipe the handle dry.

Materials and care

IKAPE states that the handle is 100% natural mahogany and describes the portafilter as resistant to oxidation, corrosion and rust. Wash the basket by hand, wipe the handle with a damp cloth and dry it, and keep the wood out of the dishwasher. The handle is solid wood, so IKAPE notes that its colour can differ slightly from the photos.
