An airtight canister with a one-way valve

The IKAPE canister is an airtight coffee bean canister in 304 stainless steel, with a silicone seal and a one-way CO2 valve. IKAPE states that the valve and the seal keep air out and the beans free of oxidation, which helps them stay fresh. It holds 300, 600 or 900 g of beans.

The valve and the seal

  • One-way CO2 valve: lets the carbon dioxide from the beans escape, while the canister stays closed to air.
  • Silicone seal: IKAPE describes it as a 100% BPA-free silicone rubber seal.
  • Clip lid: in IKAPE's photos the lid is hinged and closes with a metal clip.
  • Body: 304 stainless steel.

Date tracker and scoop

The lid carries a date tracker that you set to the storage or expiry date. A stainless steel scoop comes with the canister and attaches to its hook. In IKAPE's photos the scoop is marked 1/8 cup, 30 ml.

Choose the right size

  • 300 g: the smallest, for one bag of beans at a time.
  • 600 g: twice the capacity, for two bags or one larger bag.
  • 900 g: the largest, for beans bought in bulk.

IKAPE gives each size as the weight of coffee beans it holds. A canister filled close to the top leaves less air above the beans.

Tea, flour and other dry goods

IKAPE states that the canister also stores tea, flour, grains, sugar, salt and most other ingredients that need to be kept fresh.

How to use it

  1. Pour the beans in, leaving as little space above them as the size allows.
  2. Close the lid and fasten the clip so the seal meets the rim all the way round.
  3. Set the date tracker to the storage or expiry date.
  4. Keep the canister out of direct sun and away from the heat of the machine.
  5. Hang the scoop on its hook so it stays out of the beans.

Materials and care

IKAPE names 304 stainless steel for the body, 100% BPA-free silicone for the seal and stainless steel for the scoop. Wash the canister by hand and dry it fully before you refill it, because damp spoils fresh beans. Check now and then that the valve is clear of chaff and oils.
