These are IKAPE's Combo ceramic espresso cups: 180 ml, fired at high temperature and glazed in seven gradient colours. The body is wide and rounded, and the rim tapers inward. IKAPE states that the shape concentrates the coffee's aroma, and suggests the cup for everyday coffee, for smelling coffee beans and for pour-over tastings.

Body, base and rim

The cup has a bulbous body over a hemispherical base, which IKAPE says helps the coffee flow, and curved walls with room inside for the flavours to open up. The rim narrows inward. IKAPE states that this reduces aroma loss and gives good contact with the lips as you sip.

Porcelain surface, holds the heat

IKAPE makes the cups from clay and glazes selected by its own team. IKAPE describes the surface as porcelain, delicate and translucent, smooth to the touch and resistant to scratches and chips, and states that the ceramic retains heat well. Warm the cup with hot water before you pour, so it takes less heat from the coffee.

Seven gradient glazes

The glaze runs in a gradient, so the colour shifts across the body of the cup. You can choose black, blue, cyan, light green, purple, red or yellow.

Materials and care

Wash the cup by hand with a soft cloth or sponge, and keep abrasive pads off the glaze.

Avoid sudden changes of temperature, for example pouring a hot extraction into a cup taken from a cold cupboard. Rinsing the cup with hot water first warms it gently.
