A portafilter that stands up by itself

The IKAPE CUBOID is an E61 bottomless portafilter with a flat base. Unlike a portafilter with a curved bottom, it sits level on the counter. IKAPE states that this removes the need for a separate portafilter holder or a tamping station: you dose into it where it stands, tamp it on any flat surface and lock it in.

Built for E61 group heads

The portafilter is made for 58 mm E61 group heads, and IKAPE names Rocket, ECM and Lelit as examples. It is a bottomless body with no spouts, so you can watch the extraction from below and see channelling as it happens.

The honeycomb basket

It ships with IKAPE's high-extraction basket, which has a dual-layer honeycomb pattern. IKAPE states that the layout spreads the water across the bed and reduces channelling, and that the basket is designed to increase the extraction yield.

A 600 g body

The portafilter weighs 600 g and is built from stainless steel and aluminium alloy. IKAPE states that the weight gives it heat stability during extraction and a balanced feel in the hand, and that it is built for long-term durability.

How to use it

Warm the portafilter under the group head before the first shot of the day.
Stand it on the bench, dose into the basket and level the grounds.
Tamp it where it stands; the flat base keeps it square without a holder.
Lock it in, start the pump and watch the underside of the basket.
Knock out the puck, rinse the basket and dry the body.

Materials and care

IKAPE describes the portafilter as a blend of stainless steel and aluminium alloy. Rinse the basket after every shot and wipe the body down, because coffee oils set hard on a warm portafilter. Wash it by hand and dry the body afterwards.
