A bottomless portafilter with an open head
The IKAPE openwork portafilter is bottomless, and three rounded arcs are cut into its head. IKAPE states that the arcs make the extraction easier to see. The 54 mm version is a Sage / Breville bottomless portafilter and the 58 mm version fits E61 group machines; both come fitted with an IKAPE precision basket.
The basket that comes with it
The portafilter ships with the IKAPE High Extraction Precision Basket, model Honeycomb: 16 g with the 54 mm version and 18 g with the 58 mm version. IKAPE states that this basket improves extraction and gives a more uniform flavour.
With no bottom, the portafilter lets you see how evenly the coffee was distributed and tamped. IKAPE states that this helps you reduce errors in spreading and pressing the coffee.
Choose the right size
- IKAPE specifies this version for Sage / Breville machines and names BES870, BES878 and BES880, Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Duo-Temp Pro. IKAPE also states that it does not fit the Bambino or the Bambino Plus.54 mm
- IKAPE specifies this version for E61 group machines and names Flair 58, ECM, Rocket, Lelit, FAEMA, La Marzocco, Sanremo, Synesso, Slayer and VBM.58 mm
How to use it
- Grind into the basket, break up the clumps and level the bed before you tamp.
- Tamp straight down and wipe the rim clean.
- Lock in and start the shot with a clear view of the underside of the basket.
- Watch the flow: one steady stream from the centre means an even bed, while jets and side sprays mean it needs more work.
- Knock the puck out and rinse the basket before it dries.
Materials and care
IKAPE states that the body is food-grade stainless steel, comfortable to the touch and durable. It comes in black or silver. IKAPE's photos give the overall length as 220.8 mm in both sizes.
Rinse the basket after every shot and wash the portafilter by hand with warm water. Keep abrasive pads away from the finish, dry the portafilter before storing it, and soak the basket in an espresso cleaner when the holes start to slow down.
