The IKAPE petal cup is an espresso measuring cup in heat-resistant glass. Set it under the spout, catch the shot and read the yield on the scale. IKAPE states that the cup holds up to 3 oz and that the precise scale lets you control each extraction.

Reading the scale

The scale lines sit beside a branch of leaves drawn on the side of the glass. In IKAPE's photos they are marked 20, 30, 45 and 60 ml, with a Max line at 80 ml. Read the level at eye height with the cup standing on a flat surface, and note the line you stopped at so the next shot can stop there too.

The wide mouth

The cup is trapezoidal, wider at the top than at the base. IKAPE states that this shape suits different coffee makers and collects the espresso without spilling it elsewhere.

Heat-resistant glass

IKAPE makes the cup from heat-resistant glass and states that it is safe for collecting the shot straight from the spout. Warm it with hot water before the shot, because a cold glass takes heat out of a small volume of coffee.

How to use it

Rinse the glass with hot water to warm it.
Set it under the spout, centred on the stream.
Pull the shot and read the level at eye height as it fills.
Stop the shot when the level reaches your target, then pour it into your cup.
Rinse the glass straight away, before the coffee oils dry on it.

Materials and care

The cup is heat-resistant glass. Rinse it under hot water after every shot and dry it with a cloth.

Coffee oils build up into a brown film that dulls the markings if the glass is only ever rinsed cold, so wash it with detergent from time to time. Keep abrasive pads away from it, because they scratch the glass and the markings.
