Adjustable Spirograph WDT Tool for De'Longhi Dedica

An adjustable spirograph WDT tool for the 51 mm portafilter of the De'Longhi Dedica EC685. Five planetary gears carry 11 needles of 0.30 mm on a new path with every turn of the cap, and four turns stir 99.8% of the reachable area. A scale and a lock ring set the needle depth from 15 to 25 mm.

Gears do the stirring

This De'Longhi Dedica WDT tool breaks up clumps and spreads the ground coffee in the basket before you tamp. You turn the cap, and five gears, a sun gear and four planets, carry 11 fine needles through the coffee bed. Each needle draws a spirograph curve, and every turn of the cap lays a new pass.

Four turns stir 99.8% of the reachable area. The outer needle path is 46.6 mm across.

Made for the Dedica portafilter

The seat at the bottom of the tool is shaped to the 51 mm portafilter of the De'Longhi Dedica EC685. Three cut-outs take the portafilter lugs, and five magnets in the seat face hold the tool on the rim while you turn the cap.

Depth set to your basket

A scale on the body and a lock ring set how deep the needles reach, from 15 to 25 mm below the rim. The numbers on the scale give that depth in millimetres. Set the top edge of the lock ring on the number you want and tighten the lock ring. Pick a depth that stops the needles just above the floor of your basket.

The needle guard covers the needles even at the deepest setting, and its three tabs sit in the lug cut-outs of the seat.

How to use it

Pull the needle guard off.
Set the top edge of the lock ring on your depth and tighten the lock ring.
Set the tool on the portafilter with the lugs in the three cut-outs. The magnets hold it on the rim.
Hold the body and turn the cap four times.
Lift the tool straight off, put the guard back on and tamp.

Materials and care

The tool is 3D printed in matte PLA, and like any 3D printed part it shows fine layer lines on its surface. Clean it with a dry brush or with air. Do not put it in the dishwasher.
