A compact knock box for the home
This espresso knock box takes the used puck out of your portafilter: one knock on the bar and the puck drops into the box. It is round and small, Ø110 mm wide and 103 mm high, so it fits next to the machine or the grinder on a small kitchen counter. It suits portafilters from 49 to 58 mm.
Our own design, 3D printed in ABS
We designed this knock box ourselves and 3D print it in matte black ABS, a tough plastic. The pillars that hold the bar are printed solid, and so is the bar, because they take every knock. Like any 3D printed part, the box shows fine layer lines on its surface. The outer wall carries vertical grooves and the Black Tamp mark.
Knock on the bar
Aim the centre of the basket at the bar and tap. The puck splits on the bar and drops on either side. The bar is 95.5 mm long and 20 × 24 mm in section, with a rounded top. It sits 10 mm below the rim, so the rim keeps loose grounds in and a flat knock still clears the edge.
Hidden click seats
Each end of the bar sits 13 mm deep in a seat inside a rounded pillar on the inner wall. Press the bar down and it clicks into place. To empty or clean the box, lift the bar straight up. Nothing goes through the wall, there are no magnets, and nothing of the seats shows on the outside.
Holds about 9 pucks
Below the bar the box holds about 490 ml: roughly 9 pucks of 18 g or 12 pucks of 14 g. There are 66 mm of space under the bar and 42 mm free on each side of it for the puck to fall. The pillars are rounded where they meet the floor, so wet grounds tip out instead of packing into corners.
Steady on the counter
Four Ø10 mm silicone feet sit in seats on the underside and keep the box still on the counter while you knock.
How to use it
- Set the box on a flat, dry surface.
- After the shot, aim the centre of the basket at the middle of the bar.
- Knock the portafilter once on the bar; the puck drops into the box.
- When the box is full, lift the bar out, tip the grounds into the bin or compost and press the bar back until it clicks.
Materials and care
The box and the bar are 3D printed in matte black ABS. Wash them by hand: take the bar out, rinse both parts and let them dry. They are not dishwasher safe.
