This is IKAPE's 51 mm bottomless portafilter for 3-ear group heads, with a 51 mm stainless steel basket. What a bottomless portafilter shows

With no spouts under the basket, the coffee leaves in full view. An even stream means the bed is uniform; a jet running off to one side means the water has cut a channel through it. What you see tells you whether the grind or the distribution is at fault.

The basket that comes with it

The portafilter comes with a 51 mm stainless steel filter basket, labelled a 2-cup basket in IKAPE's photos. IKAPE describes it as finely perforated for more even filtering, cast in food-grade stainless steel, hand-polished and sized to seat properly in the portafilter.

How to use it

  1. Warm the portafilter under the group head before the first shot.
  2. Dose, distribute and tamp level; with no spouts an uneven tamp shows at once.
  3. Lock it in, start the pump and watch the underside of the basket.
  4. Keep the cup close under the basket, because a failed puck sprays sideways.
  5. Knock the puck out, rinse the basket and dry the handle.

Materials and care

The basket is stainless steel. IKAPE describes the wooden handle as 100% natural wood; the other two handles are sold as resin and pearl white. Wash the basket by hand, wipe the handle with a damp cloth and dry it. Keep a wooden handle out of the dishwasher.
