The grounds that miss the basket

This is a dosing funnel Breville and Sage owners fit to the 54 mm portafilter. A 54 mm basket is a small target, and some of each dose lands on the rim, the ears and the bench. IKAPE states that with the funnel all the grounds fall into the basket, which stops them splashing and keeps the bench neat.

Grounds left on the rim can also stop the basket seating cleanly in the group, so a clean rim matters before you lock in. IKAPE says the funnel reduces both the mess and the effort of loading the basket.

Which machines it fits

IKAPE designed it for 54 mm Breville portafilter baskets, the size used across the Sage and Breville range, including the Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Bambino Plus. It is sold in 54 mm only.

How to use it

Set the funnel on the portafilter so it sits flat on the rim.
Dose the ground coffee into it.
Lift the funnel straight up, then prepare the puck and tamp as usual.
Wipe the rim of the basket before locking it into the group.

Materials and care

The funnel is made of aluminium alloy, which IKAPE describes as food-grade and says will not rust or corrode. IKAPE states that it can go in the dishwasher, and that a brush or a sponge is enough to clean it.

Dry it after washing, and before the next dose goes in. Coffee oil builds up on the inner wall over time and comes off with warm water and a brush.
