Fourteen needles, one press
This IKAPE spring loaded WDT tool carries 14 stainless steel needles of 0.25 mm in a clover-leaf planetary layout. One press turns them through the bed in an orbital pattern, and the head springs back. It is sold for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets.
Fixed needles and a gentle press
IKAPE states that the needles on this tool cannot be replaced, and that a bent needle has to be straightened by hand. It also asks for a gentle press and recommends about three presses, because pressing more often pushes the grounds towards the basket wall.
Depth set to the millimetre
A stepless knob on the top sets how deep the needles reach. IKAPE states that it sets the depth to the millimetre for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets and for doses from 14 to 22 g, so the needles stir the bed from the bottom to the top.
The base is weighted and magnetic
The tool comes with a weighted magnetic base and snaps upright into it. IKAPE states that the base keeps the fine needles from bending and keeps stray grounds off the worktop.

How to use it
- Set the depth knob for your basket and dose before the first shot.
- Grind into the basket, with a dosing funnel on the rim if you use one.
- Rest the tool on the basket and press gently, about three times as IKAPE recommends.
- Lift it straight up, dock it on its base, then level and tamp.
Materials and care
IKAPE builds the tool from aluminium alloy and 304 stainless steel, hard-anodized for a matte finish. The needles are stainless steel.
Rinse the needles while the grounds are fresh and dry them before docking. Press gently, because the needles are fine and cannot be replaced; if one bends, straighten it by hand. Wipe the anodized body with a damp cloth and do not scour it.
