The IKAPE KKLUO is a flat bottom portafilter for 58 mm E61 group heads. Its back is flat and straight, so it lies level on the counter. IKAPE states that this removes the need for a portafilter holder, a tamper mat and a tamping station: you dose, distribute and tamp where it lies, then lock it in.

Built for E61 group heads

IKAPE describes the body as a new mould for 58 mm E61 group heads, and lists ECM, La Marzocco, Lelit, Rocket, San Remo, Bezzera and Gemilai among the brands whose machines it fits. It is made in one size, for E61 groups only.

The precision basket

The basket that comes with it has a double-layer construction and a compass-like geometric pattern of holes. IKAPE states that this creates a layered, centrally focused structure in the bed and a distinct flavour profile, and that the dense inner mesh rinses clean and leaves a firmer puck.

How to use it

Warm the portafilter under the group head before the first shot of the day.
Lay it flat on the counter and dose into the basket.
Distribute and tamp while it rests on its back, square to the bench.
Lock it in, start the pump and watch the underside of the basket.
Knock out the puck, rinse the basket and dry the body.

Materials and care

IKAPE describes an aluminium alloy handle and a stainless steel head, finished with an all-black electroplated coating. Rinse the basket after every shot and wipe the body down before the oils set. Wash the portafilter by hand and keep abrasive pads off the coating.
