A tamper that clicks at 30 lb
The IKAPE V5 is a click tamper for espresso machines with 51, 53.3 or 58.35 mm baskets. A three-stage spring inside the body is calibrated to 30 lb, about 13.6 kg. When you have pressed down to that force, the tamper gives a click, and that is your signal to stop.
A replaceable spring
IKAPE states that the 30 lb spring fitted to the tamper can be replaced. You would change it to suit the roast level of your beans, the amount of coffee you dose and the extraction results you get.
A large threaded base
The base is large and threaded. IKAPE states that the threads increase the contact area between the coffee and the water. The tamper presses the grounds vertically into an even puck, which IKAPE says keeps the water flow uniform and avoids channeling.
The handle has an ergonomic shape that rests against the palm. IKAPE's instruction is to hold it in your fist and press gently.

How to use it
- Dose into a dry basket and break up clumps with a WDT tool or a distributor.
- Stand the portafilter on a mat or in a station so it cannot rock.
- Hold the handle in your fist and press gently straight down until you hear the click, then stop.
- Lift the tamper off without twisting it.
Materials and care
IKAPE states that the tamper is made of food-grade 304 stainless steel and aluminium alloy.
Wipe the base after use and dry it. Do not soak the tamper, because the spring is built into the body. Brush fresh grounds out of the threads before they dry.
