A walnut handle on a 30 lb calibrated spring

This is a spring-loaded calibrated tamper with a walnut handle, sold in 49, 51, 53.3 and 58.5 mm. It takes one variable out of the shot: the springs set the tamping pressure, so it no longer depends on how hard you happen to push that morning.

IKAPE states that built-in dual springs give a calibrated pressure of 30 lb, about 13.6 kg, and keep the press consistent. IKAPE also describes the walnut handle as a comfortable grip. If you need a tamper 49 mm across, this one comes in that size, although IKAPE names no machine for it.

How to use it

  1. Dose into a dry basket and break up clumps with a WDT tool or a distributor.
  2. Stand the portafilter on a mat or in a station so it cannot rock.
  3. Press straight down with your palm, let the springs set the pressure, then stop.
  4. Lift the tamper off without twisting and wipe the face before the grounds dry on it.

Materials and care

IKAPE names walnut for the handle. Keep the wood dry: wipe the handle, do not soak it, and keep the tamper out of the dishwasher.

Wipe the tamping face after every shot. Coffee oil left on a tamper goes rancid and can taint the next puck.
