The Polaris is an IKAPE flat bottom bottomless portafilter: it stands level on the worktop on its own base while you distribute and tamp. A portafilter that stands on its own

The Polaris is an IKAPE flat bottom bottomless portafilter for 58 mm two-ear group heads. Its flat base sits level on a flat worktop, so you can distribute, stir with a WDT tool and tamp without a tamping stand. IKAPE states that it does not tip or slip during those steps.

One machined head, one built-in basket

IKAPE machines the head from a single block of food-grade stainless steel and states that this gives it thermal stability and rigidity. A tapered, variable-diameter 304 stainless steel basket is built into the head. IKAPE states that the taper guides water evenly through the puck and prevents channelling at the edge, and that the laser-cut micro holes trap fines.

The handle

The handle is matte black aluminium with an angular profile. IKAPE describes it as anti-slip and ergonomic, with a coating that resists scratches and fingerprints, and states that the angle gives leverage and a secure hold as you lock the portafilter into the group.

The flange is the standard 58 mm two-ear pattern. IKAPE names La Marzocco, Rocket Espresso, Lelit, ECM, Sanremo, Bezzera, Profitec, Slayer, Synesso and Gemilai, plus other standard 58 mm E61 group heads.

How to use it

Set the portafilter flat base down on the worktop and grind straight into the basket.
Stir the bed with a WDT tool and level it while the portafilter stands on its own.
Tamp straight down, with the base taking the force instead of your other hand.
Wipe the rim, lock into the group and start the shot.
Watch the underside: one steady stream means the bed was even.

Materials and care

IKAPE names 304 stainless steel for the basket, food-grade stainless steel for the head and coated aluminium for the handle. It states that the stainless steel resists corrosion and high temperatures, and that the smooth inner surfaces keep coffee oils and residue from building up.

Rinse the head and the built-in basket after every shot. Wash by hand in warm water, keep abrasive pads away from the coating on the handle, and dry the portafilter before you put it away.
