Eight pins that stir as the tool turns
The IKAPE rotary WDT tool breaks up clumps in ground coffee before you tamp. Its eight pins are fixed in different positions, so as the tool turns they stir the coffee on circles of different diameter. IKAPE states that this breaks up the lumps evenly and efficiently. It comes in 51, 54 and 58 mm.
Depth set to your basket
Baskets differ in depth, so the reach of the pins adjusts. Loosen the wooden part at the top counterclockwise and move it to the right height, set the metal part underneath the wood to the matching position, then tighten the two parts together.
A ring that is a base and a funnel
The magnetic ring does two jobs. On the bench it is the base the tool stands in. On the portafilter it is a dosing funnel that keeps the ground coffee inside the basket while the pins turn. IKAPE recommends shaking the ground coffee to settle it straight after stirring.
The tool also comes with a silicone base that protects the needles; in IKAPE's photos the ring sits on it, and the photo caption says the base comes with a brush. IKAPE states that the magnet draws the needles in when you lift the tool, so it can stand for a short time without its base and the needles come to no harm.

How to use it
- Set the depth for the basket you use, and tighten the wooden and metal parts together.
- Sit the magnetic ring on the basket and grind the dose into it.
- Lower the pins into the coffee and turn the tool a few times.
- Lift the tool off, shake the portafilter lightly to settle the dose, then tamp.
Materials and care
The depth adjuster is wood over a metal part, and the needle-protection base is silicone.
Rinse the pins when grounds cake between them, and dry them before the tool goes back on its base. Wipe the wooden part with a damp cloth and do not soak it. Keep both faces of the ring clean so it sits flat on the basket.
