A mat with a seat for each tool
The IKAPE V1 is a silicone tamping mat with holder: a 295 × 217 mm mat with moulded places for the portafilter, the tamper and the distributor. IKAPE says you can also tamp the coffee with the portafilter lying in its recess on the mat. Each tool goes back to the same place after use.
The layout
IKAPE's drawing shows a long recess for the portafilter, two round seats of 60 mm, two round recesses of 62 mm and 72 mm at the edge, and a 45 mm slot. The mat is black, with the IKAPE logo moulded into it.
It stays where you put it
IKAPE describes the silicone as soft and non-slip: the mat lies snugly on the worktop and does not slide. According to IKAPE, this makes tamping steadier and more even and protects the counter from wear.
How to use it
- Unroll the mat on a dry, flat surface and let it settle for a few minutes.
- Put the tamper and the distributor in their round seats and the portafilter in the long recess.
- Tamp with the portafilter in its recess, pressing straight down.
- Brush the loose grounds off and wipe the mat before they dry in.
- Roll it up when the bench is needed for something else.
Materials and care
IKAPE names food-grade, non-slip and odourless silicone, and states separately that the mat is coated with a special, safe coating. It cleans with water or soapy water, and IKAPE describes it as flexible and durable.
Dry it flat after washing. IKAPE notes that a new mat can smell when the packaging is opened and that the smell goes after a few hours in the air. Keep it away from blades and abrasives, and store it rolled up.
