A dosing ring that sits on the rim
The IKAPE V3 espresso magnetic dosing funnel is a non-embedded ring: it sits on top of the portafilter basket and does not drop into it. Eight to ten magnets hold it in place while you dose and stir. IKAPE states that the non-embedded fit makes it better suited to puck prep on a 58 mm portafilter.
What the magnets do
IKAPE fits 8 to 10 evenly spaced magnets and describes their hold as strong enough to keep the ring steady on the basket. It stays on while you fill it and stir the grounds with a WDT tool, and it lifts straight off when you are done.
Choose the right size
- De'Longhi machines with 51 mm portafilters, such as the Dedica EC680, EC155, ECP3120, ECP3420 and ECP3531.51 mm
- Sage / Breville machines with 54 mm baskets: Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Bambino Plus, Infuser and Duo-Temp Pro.54 mm
- standard 58 mm baskets on E61 group machines, Gaggia Classic, Classic Pro, Baby and Carezza, Rancilio Silvia, Lelit, ECM, Profitec and Gevi, and the 58 mm portafilters of the Sage / Breville Dual Boiler, Oracle and Oracle Touch.58 mm
How to use it
- Set the ring on the portafilter and let the magnets pull it flat onto the rim.
- Fill it with ground coffee; the wall keeps stray grounds off the bar.
- Stir the dose with a WDT tool until no clumps remain.
- Lift the ring straight up, then level and tamp.
- Lay a puck screen on the bed if you use one, and lock the portafilter in.
Materials and care
The ring is aluminium alloy, which IKAPE describes as rust and corrosion resistant, light and durable. Rinse it under running water and dry it straight away.
Keep it away from strong alkaline cleaners, which attack aluminium. Coffee oil builds up on the inner wall over time and comes off with warm water and a brush. Do not soak the ring for long periods.
