Adjustable Spirograph WDT Tool
An adjustable spirograph WDT tool for espresso. Five planetary gears carry 11 needles of 0.30 mm on a new path with every turn of the cap, and four turns stir 99.6% of the reachable area. A scale and a lock ring set the needle depth from 20 to 30 mm. Matte black PLA.

Gears do the stirring
This spirograph WDT tool breaks up clumps and spreads the ground coffee in the basket before you tamp. You turn the cap, and five gears, a sun gear and four planets, carry 11 fine needles through the coffee bed. Each needle draws a spirograph curve, and every turn of the cap lays a new pass.
One turn stirs 72% of the reachable area, two turns 93%, three turns 98% and four turns 99.6%. After four to five turns the reachable area is stirred evenly. The needle paths stay about 2.5 mm inside the basket wall, so the needles never touch the basket.
Depth set to your basket
A scale on the body and a lock ring set how deep the needles reach, from 20 to 30 mm in 1 mm steps, so the tips stay just clear of the basket floor. Turn the sleeve until the edge of the lock ring sits on your basket's mark, then tighten the lock ring.
The basket marks sit at 21 mm for 15 g, 23 mm for 18 g, 25 mm for 20 g, 27 mm for 22 g and 29 mm for 25 g, with 1 mm ticks in between.
A short skirt fits over the basket rim and centres the tool on it, and magnets in the seat help hold it in place.
Which size to choose
Choose your basket size in the options: 49, 51, 53, 54, 55, 57 or 58 mm. The 58 mm version fits 58 mm double and triple baskets with an inside diameter of 58.1 mm or more, measured 1 to 2 mm below the edge, a lip up to 70 mm across and a height of 21 to 31 mm.
Machines with 58 mm baskets include Bezzera, ECM, Expobar, Flair 58, La Marzocco, Lelit (58 mm models), Lucca, Profitec, Quick Mill, Rancilio, Rocket and Sanremo.
E61 group machines, the Gaggia Classic and Classic Pro, and the Breville / Sage Dual Boiler and Oracle (58 mm) take them too.
How to use it
- Pull the needle guard straight off.
- Turn the sleeve until the edge of the lock ring sits on the mark for your basket (15, 18, 20, 22 or 25 g), then tighten the lock ring. The needles now stop just above the basket floor.
- Set the tool on the basket. The skirt centres it over the rim.
- Turn the cap four or five times.
- Lift the tool straight out, push the guard back on and tamp.
Materials and care
The tool is 3D printed in matte black PLA, and like any 3D printed part it shows fine layer lines on its surface. Clean it with a dry brush or with air.
