A spring tamper with adjustable force
The IKAPE adjustable pressure tamper is a calibrated spring tamper whose pressing force you can change. IKAPE built it on its spring tamper and made the pressure adjustable, so you can match the force to your coffee machine and to how fine your beans are ground. It comes in 51, 53.3 and 58.5 mm.
Two springs with two jobs
Both springs are built into the tamper. The main spring provides the tamping force and is the one you adjust. IKAPE states that the second spring keeps the tamper balanced while you press, so the coffee is not pressed unevenly.
IKAPE's photos show the range as 20–35 lb and the method: twist the top cap clockwise for more pressure and anticlockwise for less.

How to use it
- Twist the top cap to the force you want before you start, and leave it there while you dial in the coffee.
- Dose into a dry basket and break up clumps with a WDT tool or a distributor.
- Press straight down until the mechanism gives, then stop.
- Lift the tamper off without twisting it. When you change the force, keep everything else the same for that shot.
Materials and care
IKAPE states that the tamper is made of food-grade 304 stainless steel and aluminium alloy, and that the handle is ergonomically designed for a comfortable grip and balanced force.
Wipe the base after use and dry it. Do not soak the tamper, because the mechanism and its springs sit inside the body. Brush fresh grounds off the base before they dry.
