A calibrated tamper with a walnut handle
The IKAPE V3 is a walnut tamper with a calibrated spring and a black base. IKAPE describes the walnut handle as ergonomic, with a comfortable grip. It comes in 51 mm for De'Longhi, 53.3 mm for Sage / Breville and 58.35 mm for E61 and other 58 mm machines.
Dual springs, set to 30 lb
IKAPE states that the main spring is calibrated at 30 lb, about 13.6 kg, and that the second spring keeps the tamper balanced while you press, so the coffee is not pressed unevenly.
A titanium-plated base
IKAPE states that a titanium plating process gives the base its black colour. The plated surface is the part of the tamper that touches the coffee.
Choose the right size
- De'Longhi Dedica (EC685 / EC885) and other compact 51 mm machines. IKAPE names De'Longhi for this size.51 mm
- Sage / Breville machines with 54 mm baskets, including Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Bambino Plus. IKAPE names Breville for this size.53.3 mm
- 58.35 mm: standard 58 mm baskets on E61 group machines, Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, Lelit, ECM, Profitec and La Marzocco. IKAPE names E61 machines for this size.
How to use it
- Dose into a dry basket and break up clumps with a WDT tool or a distributor.
- Stand the portafilter on a mat or in a station so it cannot rock.
- Press straight down with your palm until the spring gives, then stop.
- Lift the tamper off without twisting, and wipe the base before the grounds dry on it.
Materials and care
IKAPE states that the tamper is made of food-grade 304 stainless steel and aluminium alloy, with a walnut handle and a titanium-plated black base.
Keep the wood dry: wipe the handle, never soak it, and keep the tamper out of the dishwasher. Keep abrasives off the plated base, because worn plating cannot be restored.
