Ground coffee or a capsule, from the same machine
The IKAPE Kapo K1 is a battery portable espresso maker with two extraction compartments that you can swap at any time. One is a 51 mm basket for freshly ground coffee; the other takes small coffee capsules. IKAPE suggests ground coffee at home, in the office or when camping, and capsules when hiking or travelling. It weighs about 700 g.
A 51 mm basket for your own tamper
The basket takes 14 to 18 g of ground coffee depending on the roast, and IKAPE recommends 16 g. IKAPE states that it can be tamped with a 51 mm tamper at 13.6 kg (30 lb), so your own 51 mm tamper fits. Grind as for a normal espresso basket, not as fine as a high-extraction basket needs.
Up to 18 bar, with an automatic stop
A built-in motor gives a maximum extraction pressure of 18 bar. Hold the power button and espresso appears after about 5 seconds. A single press pauses the extraction; if you do not pause it, the K1 stops by itself after 40 seconds to protect the machine.
The water tank and the battery
The tank holds a maximum of 100 ml and is marked at 50 ml and 100 ml. IKAPE recommends 60 ml of hot water for one extraction, which gives 35 to 40 ml of espresso. The 2 000 mAh battery is stated to last up to 100 extractions in normal use. The K1 has no heater, so fill it with water that is already hot.
How to use it
- Fit the compartment you want: the ground-coffee basket or the capsule compartment.
- Dose 16 g into the basket and tamp it with a 51 mm tamper, or insert a capsule.
- Screw the coffee compartment on until it is tight; IKAPE notes that a loose thread lets water leak during extraction.
- Fill the tank with about 60 ml of hot water.
- Hold the power button and let the machine stop by itself, or press once to pause.
Materials and care
Rinse the basket, the capsule compartment and the brew head after every shot so coffee oils do not build up. Wipe the body with a damp cloth and do not submerge the main unit. Charge the battery before a trip, and dry every part before the machine goes back in a bag.
