The IKAPE Pearl White bottomless portafilter has a pressed-wood handle in cream and black layers and a fine-hole stainless steel basket. It comes in six fits: a Gaggia bottomless portafilter at 58 mm (2 ears), E61, Barsetto and WPM at 58 mm, Sage / Breville at 54 mm and De'Longhi at 51 mm.

A bottomless portafilter with a pressed-wood handle

The IKAPE Pearl White is a bottomless portafilter with a pressed-wood handle and a fine-hole stainless steel filter basket. It is sold in six machine fits, among them a Gaggia bottomless portafilter for 58 mm machines with two ears. Without spouts, the underside of the basket stays in view while the shot runs.

What the open bottom shows

With the bottom removed, the coffee leaves the basket in the open. An even stream across the basket means the bed is uniform; a jet running off to one side means the water has found a channel through it. You adjust the grind, the dose or the tamp for the next shot.

The handle and the basket

IKAPE describes the handle as wood slabs compacted in a strong press: as hard as solid wood, with no visible signs of compression, and smooth to the touch. In IKAPE's photos the Pearl White handle shows cream and black layers. The supplied basket is stainless steel with fine holes, which IKAPE says filter the grounds more evenly.

How to use it

  1. Warm the portafilter under the group head before the first shot of the day.
  2. Dose, distribute and tamp level; with no spouts an uneven tamp shows at once.
  3. Lock it in, start the pump and watch the underside of the basket.
  4. Keep the cup close under the basket, because a failed puck sprays sideways.
  5. Knock the puck out, rinse the basket and dry the handle.

Materials and care

The handle is pressed wood and the basket is stainless steel. Wash the basket by hand and wipe the handle with a damp cloth, then dry it; wood should never go into a dishwasher. IKAPE notes that the colour of a wooden handle can differ slightly from piece to piece, so yours will not match a photograph exactly.
