A holder for one-handed puck prep
This IKAPE portafilter holder keeps the portafilter level and still while you grind into it, stir and tamp. IKAPE states that with the portafilter seated in it you can do puck prep with one hand. It is cut from one piece of aluminium alloy, and IKAPE describes it as compact, taking up little space on the bar.
What the V2 changed
IKAPE describes two changes: externally adjustable tightening nuts, and support brackets that flare outwards, so the holder adapts to different portafilter models. The extended bracket takes portafilters with more handle lengths and weights, up to 600 g by IKAPE's figure.
Which portafilters it will not take
IKAPE states that its KKLUO, CUBOID, Polaris and other portafilter models that stand flat on the worktop by themselves do not fit this holder, and that those models need no holder.
IKAPE also notes that the weight of the portafilter should be spread evenly along the handle. A handle that is heavy at the far end levers against the bracket, and the holder cannot support it properly.
Choose the right size
- 51 / 54 mm: IKAPE specifies this version for 51 mm and 54 mm portafilters and names De'Longhi, Breville and Sage.
- IKAPE specifies this version for 58 mm portafilters.58 mm
The clip opening of the holder is 25 mm.
How to use it
- Loosen the outer nuts, set the portafilter in the holder and rest the handle on the support bracket.
- Tighten the nuts until the portafilter sits firmly and the handle is level.
- Grind into the basket, stir the bed and tamp straight down.
- Lift the portafilter out and lock it into the group.
- Rinse the loose grounds out of the holder and dry it.
Materials and care
The body is one-piece cut aluminium alloy. IKAPE states that you can rinse loose coffee out of the holder with water, and that it does not rust once the water drops are wiped off.
Dry it after rinsing, keep abrasive pads away from the finish, and check the nuts from time to time, because a clamp that has worked loose lets the portafilter drop.
