IKAPE V3 Calibrated Spring Tamper (45.5–58.35 mm, Steel Base)
The IKAPE V3 is a spring loaded tamper with two springs: the main spring is calibrated at 30 lb (13.6 kg), the second keeps the tamper balanced as you press. The base is 304 stainless steel, the shell aluminium alloy. Silver comes in 45.5 to 58.35 mm, black in 51, 53.3 and 58.35 mm.

A tamper calibrated at 30 lb
The IKAPE V3 is a spring loaded tamper for espresso baskets from 45.5 to 58.35 mm. Its main spring is calibrated at 30 lb (13.6 kg) of pressure. Tamping presses the ground coffee into an even puck, and IKAPE states that this lets the water flow through evenly instead of channelling.
IKAPE counts tamping as one of four extraction variables, next to grind size, dose and water temperature.
Two springs and a cylindrical shaft
The main spring sets the 30 lb. The second spring keeps the tamper balanced during the press, so one side of the coffee is not pressed harder than the other. IKAPE states that the centre shaft has been revised several times and is now cylindrical, for smoother pressing. It describes the handle as ergonomic, shaped for a comfortable grip and an even spread of force.
IKAPE's product photos also show a "constant block" added where the shaft meets the base, and IKAPE states that it counters uneven pressure while you tamp.
Choose the right size
- 45.5 mm and 49 mm: silver only. IKAPE names no machine for either size, so measure your basket before ordering.45.5 mm
- De'Longhi Dedica (EC685 / EC885) and other compact 51 mm machines. Black or silver.51 mm
- Sage / Breville machines with 54 mm baskets, including Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Bambino Plus. Black or silver.53.3 mm
- 58.35 mm: standard 58 mm baskets on E61 group machines, Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, Lelit, ECM, Profitec and La Marzocco. Black or silver.
How to use it
- Dose into a dry basket and break up clumps with a WDT tool or a distributor.
- Stand the portafilter on a mat or in a station so it cannot rock.
- Press straight down with your palm until the spring gives, then stop.
- Lift the tamper off without twisting it.
Materials and care
The shell is aluminium alloy and the base is 304 stainless steel. IKAPE describes the stainless steel as food grade.
Wipe the tamping face while the grounds on it are still fresh, then dry the tamper. Do not soak it, because the springs sit inside the body.
