A calibrated tamper whose spring is on show
The IKAPE V3 is a transparent coffee tamper: a calibrated, spring-loaded tamper with a clear acrylic handle and a flat base. The spring gives way at a set force, so each puck is pressed the same way, and the clear handle shows the spring while it works. IKAPE also describes the handle as ergonomic.
What the calibration does
IKAPE states that the spring-loaded mechanism applies a constant pressure of over 30 lb, about 13.6 kg. You press until the mechanism gives, and the force on the coffee no longer depends on how hard you lean. IKAPE adds that the upgraded press has a constant block against pressure deviation during the tamp.
An evenly pressed bed gives the water less chance to cut a channel down one side of the basket. Because the acrylic is clear, the travel of the spring is visible.
Choose the right size
- De'Longhi Dedica (EC680, EC685, EC885) and other De'Longhi machines with 51 mm portafilters, such as the EC155, ECP3120, ECP3420 and ECP3531.51 mm
- Sage / Breville machines with 54 mm baskets: Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Bambino Plus, Infuser and Duo-Temp Pro.53.3 mm

How to use it
- Grind into a dry basket, then break up any clumps with a WDT tool or a distributor.
- Rest the portafilter on a tamping mat or in a station and set the tamper flat on the coffee.
- Press straight down with your palm until the spring gives, and stop there.
- Lift the tamper away without twisting it.
Materials and care
The handle is transparent acrylic and the base is flat. IKAPE notes that small assembly marks or specks may sit inside the handle and treats them as normal. It advises against taking the tamper apart, because putting it back together leaves visible marks.
Wipe the base with a soft, damp cloth after use and store the tamper dry. Do not soak it, and keep solvents and abrasive cleaners away from the acrylic, which they cloud permanently.
