IKAPE Variable Diameter Espresso Basket (54 / 58 mm to 32 mm)
The IKAPE variable diameter basket narrows a 54 or 58 mm portafilter to a 32 mm bed, so the same dose forms a deeper puck and you grind coarser. The 33 mm high versions sit flush with the portafilter; the 38 mm version, for 58 mm only, holds 18–22 g and protrudes below it.

A narrower bed for the same dose
In a standard 58 mm basket, 18 g of coffee needs a fine grind to reach a stable 9 bar extraction pressure. The IKAPE variable diameter basket narrows the bed to 32 mm, so the same 18 g, or less, sits much deeper. The grind moves coarser and the water takes longer to work through the puck.
IKAPE states that a fine grind in a standard basket can raise the extraction yield but also draws out bitter flavours, and describes the shot from the narrower bed as sweeter and more aromatic, with a smoother mouthfeel. The basket is CNC-machined in one piece, with a conical, trapezoidal wall.
How the deeper bed changes the shot
A thicker puck concentrates the water pressure and raises the flow resistance, so extraction slows down and the coffee and water stay in contact longer. IKAPE states that this evens out the extraction and reduces channelling, and that the deeper basket allows a thorough pre-infusion.
IKAPE also notes that the taper builds enough pressure for a shot without tamping, if the grind is set for it. Whatever the beans, grind coarser than for a standard basket; IKAPE adds that light roasts need a coarser grind as well, and that a finer grind extracts poorly.
Choose the right size
- 54 to 32 mm, 33 mm high: for 54 mm portafilters, flush with the bottom of the portafilter.
- 58 to 32 mm, 33 mm high: for 58 mm portafilters, flush with the bottom and holding 16–18 g.
- 58 to 32 mm, 38 mm high: the deeper version for 58 mm portafilters, holding 18–22 g. It is not flush and protrudes below the bottom of the portafilter. IKAPE recommends this one if you use a puck screen, because the 33 mm basket is too tight for it.
- 32 mm paper filters, 200 pcs: the matching consumable, sold under this listing. The pack contains paper only and no basket.32 mm
The two 33 mm versions sit flush with the bottom of the portafilter, and IKAPE states that they work with portafilter holders and tamper stations.
How to use it
- Drop the basket into your portafilter in place of the standard one.
- Set the grinder coarser than your normal espresso setting, then dose as usual.
- Break up the clumps with a WDT tool and level the bed with a distributor.
- Tamp if you want to, or extract without tamping and adjust the grind instead.
- If no coffee comes through, set the grind coarser again.
Materials and care
The basket is CNC-machined in one piece. Knock the puck out after each shot, rinse the basket under hot water and dry it. Grounds collect in the narrow bottom section, and a soft brush reaches them.
