A levelling head and a tamping head on one tool
This IKAPE tool is an adjustable coffee distributor & tamper with a working head at each end. One end is a four-paddle propeller that levels the grounds in the basket, and the other end tamps them. You turn the tool over between the two steps. It is made in 51, 53.3 and 58.5 mm.
Depth set on a marked scale
The working depth is adjustable against a visible scale, so it can be set for different baskets and doses. IKAPE's photos show a scale marked 5 to 9 at each end of the tool. Once you have found the setting for your basket, you can read it off the scale and come back to it later.
What the paddles do
IKAPE states that static and uneven filling leave ground coffee with loose and dense patches and an uneven surface. Turning the propeller head gently breaks up the clumps and smooths the grounds, so the density is even across the puck and water passes through it evenly.
IKAPE also states that levelling by hand easily leaves uneven pressure and a tilted surface, and that distributing before you tamp reduces cracks inside the puck.

- De'Longhi Dedica (EC685 / EC885) and other compact 51 mm machines. Black or white.51 mm
- Sage / Breville machines with 54 mm baskets, including Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Bambino Plus. Black, silver or white.53.3 mm
- IKAPE's larger size, listed for machines with 58 mm baskets: E61 group machines, Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, Lelit, ECM, Profitec and La Marzocco. Black, silver or white.58.5 mm
How to use it
- With the basket empty, set the depth on the scale for your basket and dose.
- Grind into a dry basket, rest the propeller head on the rim and turn it gently until the surface is level.
- Turn the tool over, set the tamping head on the coffee and press straight down.
- Lift it away without twisting, and brush out the paddles before the grounds dry on them.
Materials and care
IKAPE states that both working heads are food-grade 304 stainless steel, and describes them as rust-resistant and durable at high temperatures. In IKAPE's photos the heads are bare steel, and the black, white or silver colour sits on the knurled band in the middle.
Wipe the heads after use and dry them. Do not soak the tool. Coffee packed between the paddles comes out with a dry brush while it is fresh.
