IKAPE Convex Basket, Black Ceramic (54 / 58 mm to 32 mm)
A convex basket for 54 or 58 mm portafilters that tapers to a 32 mm bottom, so the dose forms a deeper, thicker bed. The stainless steel body carries a baked ceramic carbon coating. The 33 mm high versions take 16–18 g and the 38 mm version 18–22 g. Grind coarser than for a flat basket.

A deeper bed in a coated basket
This convex basket is conical: it fits a 54 or 58 mm portafilter and tapers to a 32 mm bottom. IKAPE's reasoning is that the same dose sits deeper and thicker, so the water meets more resistance and slows down, and the longer contact gives a more uniform extraction with less channeling.
IKAPE contrasts this with flat baskets, which spread the coffee thin and push you toward too fine a grind. It states that the conical-trapezoidal interior is formed by integrated CNC moulding and works with the coating to give an even pre-infusion.
What the coating does
The finish is a ceramic carbon coating, baked on at very high temperature over a stainless steel body. IKAPE describes it as a food-safe ceramic layer, and states that it resists scratches from WDT needles and withstands 300 °C thermal shock.
IKAPE also states that the coating is non-stick, so coffee oils and fine grounds do not cling to the walls and a rinse or a wipe with a microfibre cloth cleans the basket.
How the deeper bed changes the shot
The basket raises the back-pressure, so grind coarser than you would for a flat basket. IKAPE is firm on this point: if a shot chokes, go coarser again. For light roasts it suggests coarsening a little less, for a more intense extraction that tames sharp acidity. For medium-dark roasts it suggests going coarser.
Choose the right size
- 54 to 32 mm, 33 mm high: for 54 mm portafilters, such as those on Sage / Breville machines. Sits flush with the bottom of the portafilter and takes doses of 16–18 g.
- 58 to 32 mm, 33 mm high: for standard 58 mm portafilters. Sits flush with the bottom of the portafilter and takes doses of 16–18 g.
- 58 to 32 mm, 38 mm high: the deeper profile, for larger doses of 18–22 g. IKAPE states that this version is not flush with the bottom of the portafilter. If you use a puck screen with an 18 g dose, IKAPE recommends this height so there is enough headroom.
IKAPE states that the flush versions have no protruding tip and fit standard tamping stations.
How to use it
- Drop the basket into the portafilter in place of the standard one.
- Set the grinder coarser than your usual espresso setting.
- Dose, break up the clumps and level the bed, then prepare the puck as usual.
- Pull the shot, and if it chokes, set the grind coarser still.
Materials and care
The body is stainless steel under a baked ceramic carbon coating in matte black. Rinse the basket under hot water or wipe it with a microfibre cloth after use. Do not scour it, because an abrasive pad can take the coating off.
