Five puck-prep tools and a knock box

The IKAPE espresso set is an espresso puck prep kit: five tools and a V2 ABS knock box that holds them between shots and collects the spent grounds. The tamper, the distributor, the dosing funnel and the puck screen come in one of three sizes, 51, 53.3 or 58.5 mm.

What is in the set

  • V4 palm tamper: a short, palm-shaped tamper that you press with the flat of your hand.
  • Gravity distributor: a gravity-type distributor that levels the coffee bed before tamping.
  • Dosing funnel: sits on the basket while you dose and keeps the rim clean.
  • V2 WDT tool: fine needles that break up clumps in the ground coffee.
  • V2 ABS knock box: collects the spent puck, and the other tools are stored on it.
  • V1 puck screen: laid on the tamped bed before you lock the portafilter in.

Choose the right size

  • IKAPE gives this version for Sage / Breville machines with 54 mm baskets.53.3 mm
  • IKAPE gives this version for E61 group machines and other machines with a 58 mm portafilter, such as Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, Lelit, ECM and Profitec.58.5 mm

How to use it

  1. Set the funnel on the basket and dose the ground coffee into it.
  2. Stir with the WDT tool until the clumps are gone, then lift the funnel away.
  3. Rest the gravity distributor on the bed and turn it until the surface is flat.
  4. Tamp with the palm tamper, straight down, and lay the puck screen on top.
  5. Pull the shot, then knock the puck into the box and put each tool back in its place.

Materials and care

IKAPE states that the set is made of food-grade aluminium alloy, stainless steel and ABS, and describes these materials as sturdy and easy to clean. It does not say which material belongs to which tool.

Rinse the puck screen and the funnel after every session and dry them. Wipe the tamper and the distributor with a damp cloth, rinse the WDT needles when they clog, and empty the knock box before the grounds dry into it.
