Gravity-assisted levelling before the tamp
This is a gravity distributor: you rest it on the basket and turn it to spread the loose grounds into an even bed before you tamp. IKAPE describes a gravity-assisted mechanism that helps guide the grounds across the basket, and lists more consistent distribution and less reliance on hand technique among its benefits.
IKAPE contrasts it with traditional distributors, which rely mainly on downward hand pressure and rotation. Its own structure, IKAPE states, lets the grounds spread more naturally across the basket surface, and it presents the result as smoother, easier espresso preparation.
Depth you set for your basket
The working depth adjusts. IKAPE lists four things to set it by: basket size, coffee dose, grinder output and your own workflow. Set it for your usual basket and dose, and reset it when either changes. IKAPE describes the base as built to move the grounds across the basket surface while it keeps turning smoothly.
Where it sits in the routine
IKAPE's order is grind, distribute, tamp, extract. The distributor works on the loose grounds only. It spreads the mound the grinder leaves out to the basket wall, so the tamper meets a level bed. It does not compress the puck, and you still need a tamper.
Choose the right size
- the smallest size, sold in silver only and at a lower price. IKAPE names no machine for it.49 mm
- De'Longhi Dedica (EC685 / EC885) and other compact 51 mm machines.51 mm
- Sage / Breville machines with 54 mm baskets, including Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Bambino Plus.53.3 mm
- the largest size, for machines with 58 mm baskets: E61 group machines, Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, Lelit, ECM, Profitec and La Marzocco.58.5 mm
How to use it
- Set the depth for your basket and dose before you grind.
- Grind into a dry basket and settle the grounds with a light tap.
- Rest the distributor on the basket and turn it two or three times in one direction.
- Lift it straight off, then tamp.
Materials and care
The distributor comes in black, silver and white; the 49 mm size comes in silver only.
Brush the base clean after use and wipe the body with a dry cloth. Do not soak the tool. Grounds packed onto the base come off more easily while they are fresh.
